New College Institute students, staff, and faculty may once again nominate a NCI affiliated teacher for the 2018 Lula White Johnson Distinguished Teaching Award. This recognition is in memory of Lula White Johnson, a beloved high school English teacher, department chair, and civic leader in Martinsville. The nominee should be one that exemplifies the characteristics of Johnson such as the ability to incite intellectual curiosity and engage students in active learning and demonstrate a committed to community service. New College Foundation recently awarded $52,500 in scholarships for the 2017-18 academic year to twenty-four (24) students enrolled in NCI programs through Longwood and James Madison universities. The awards were made possible by generous donors who have contributed thirteen endowed scholarships. Students who received awards are enrolled in Longwood’s Elementary Education and Social Work programs and JMU’s Education Leadership Endorsement Program.
The foundation will begin another scholarship cycle in the spring for the 2018-19 academic year. Look for details coming soon.
